Easter Sunday is right around the corner and for many people in El Paso, Texas that means it is also time for the annual tradition of the Mt. Cristo Rey Good Friday hike!

Growing up, a core memory of mine was joining my family for the Mt. Cristo Rey hike every Good Friday, and right after we would head to La Malinche and enjoy some lent-friendly food.

If you’ve never experienced hiking up Mt. Cristo Rey then now is your chance because The Mt. Cristo Rey Restoration Committee is inviting the public to the Good Friday hike this weekend.

The 2-mile-long hike and trail is open to people of all ages. If you’re not much of a hiker, don’t worry because security and first aid services will be available at the event to make sure all hikers feel safe throughout the hike.

Mt. Cristo Rey, which is located at 1 Cristo Rey Rd in Sunland Park, New Mexico, will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Good Friday, March 29. Gates will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 30.

If you plan on heading out to the hike make sure to wear your best tennis shoes to avoid any slipping! The forecast for this Friday seems to be a nice forecast, but the air usually gets a lot cooler the higher up you climb so pack a light sweater if you can, a nice hat and some sunglasses too! Oh, and take plenty of water and lather up on some sunscreen!
